General Information
WILL TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INTRO LANGUAGE
In the City of Sturgis, many construction-related activities require permits, such as zoning, building, demolition, right-of-way, and others. Most permits are issued by the Community Development Department for building and zoning, while the Engineering Department issues right-of-way permits. Plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and fire suppression permits are issued by the State of Michigan Bureau of Construction Codes.
Our Community Development staff can assist in guiding you to the correct applications for your project. Failure to obtain the necessary permits can lead to safety concerns, increased costs, and potential delays that could jeopardize your project.
When a permit is required, the project is reviewed for compliance with the City’s zoning ordinance and, when applicable, the building code. Common project elements that are examined include, but are not limited to, lot size, building setbacks, lot coverage, building height, and off-street parking availability.
City-issued permits are required for the following types of projects: (ensure clickable links on each type)

- Building renovations, such as new windows and roofing
- Structural repairs, such as drywall removal and remodeling
- Accessory buildings and structures

- Demolitions
